Sigrún’s story

Sigrún grew up in Grindavík, where her father fished and her mother ran the harbour café. She joined the local search-and-rescue team at eighteen, which in Iceland is less a hobby and more a second citizenship.

She started guiding when she realised tour buses were driving her guests past everything she loved: the unmarked hot springs her family has soaked in for decades, the lava tubes she mapped as a teenager, the soup recipe her mother still won’t write down.

Groups are capped at six, in her own 4x4, with wool blankets and a thermos that never seems to empty.

“Iceland is not a checklist. It’s weather, soup, and knowing when to wait twenty minutes.”

We had the hot spring completely to ourselves while the northern lights came out. I still don’t fully believe it happened.

Sigrún called off the original plan because of wind and improvised a better day than the one we booked. That’s what local knowledge buys you.

The fisherman’s soup at her mother’s café was the single best thing I ate in Iceland.
