Munduk coffee farmer’s son, birdwatcher, temple ceremony keeper
📍 Born and based in Bali, Indonesia
Made grew up on his family’s coffee and clove farm in the Munduk highlands, where his grandfather taught him bird calls before the alphabet. He worked as a naturalist for a lodge, then went independent to keep groups tiny and the money in his village.
His mornings start before light in the cloud forest; his treks cross working rice terraces farmed by his neighbours’ subak cooperative, ending at whichever house is cooking lunch.
As a temple keeper’s nephew he can bring guests into water blessing ceremonies properly — dressed correctly, briefed on etiquette, welcome rather than tolerated.
“Tourists see the terraces from the road. My neighbours grew the rice. Walk with me and meet them.”
We saw more birds in three hours than in the rest of our trip combined, and drank coffee grown fifty metres from where we stood.
The water temple ceremony was handled with so much respect. Made briefed us thoroughly and it showed in how we were received.
Lunch in a farmhouse with his neighbours, rain on the roof, the best nasi campur of my life.
