Rice Terrace Trek & Village Lunch with the Subak Farmers

Tourists photograph the terraces from the road. Made walks you through them — along the clay bunds, past the shrines to the rice goddess, following the water as the subak cooperative has divided it for a thousand years. The farmers you pass are his neighbours, and he’ll stop to talk with most of them.

You’ll learn to read the terraces like a farmer: which green means two weeks to harvest, why the ducks matter, what the offerings at the water temple are for. Lunch is at whichever neighbour’s house is cooking that day — nasi campur, rain on the roof if you’re lucky.
