How to Find a Real Local Guide (Not a Big Bus Tour): 7 Ways That Work

Every traveller says the same thing: the best day of the trip was the one with the local — the guide who took you to their aunt's kitchen, their favourite ridge, the bar with no sign. And everyone has the opposite story too: the "authentic local experience" that turned out to be fifty people following an umbrella.

Here's how to reliably find the first kind.

1. Search for the person, not the tour

Instead of "food tour Lisbon", try "chef-led food tour Lisbon" or "family-run food tour Alfama". Independent guides describe themselves in first person; resellers describe an itinerary. The language in the listing tells you who wrote it.

2. Check who actually operates it

On big marketplaces, look for the operator name — often buried at the bottom of the listing. If the "operator" runs 400 tours across 30 cities, you're booking a consolidator, not a local. If it's one name running three tours in one city, that's your person.

3. Look at the group size cap

This is the single most honest number in any listing. A real local hosting something personal caps at 6–10 people, because that's how many fit in a kitchen, a 4x4 or around one table. "Max 25" means megaphone.

4. Read reviews for names

Reviews of genuine local-led experiences name the guide, over and over: "Maria remembered…", "Kenji waited until…". Reviews of commodity tours describe the sights. If no review mentions a human by name, no human was the point.

5. Ask your accommodation — the right way

Don't ask the front desk for "a tour" (you'll get whoever pays them commission). Ask a specific staff member what they'd do on a day off, and whether they know anyone who guides. Hostel staff and small guesthouse owners are gold for this.

6. Use marketplaces built for locals
