Ayaka’s story

Ayaka grew up behind the counter of her family’s tsukemono (pickle) stall in Nishiki Market, wrapping parcels before she could reach the till. She left for Tokyo to work in food PR, hated it, and came home.

Today she splits her time between the stall and hosting travellers — walking them through the market as vendors open up, then sitting them down in a friend’s machiya for a proper breakfast and, some afternoons, a tea ceremony she studied for eleven years to be allowed to lead.

Her rule for every visit: you leave knowing at least three shopkeepers by name.

“Nishiki isn’t a photo stop. It’s three hundred families. I want you to meet mine.”

The market was interesting; Ayaka was extraordinary. Vendors kept handing us things to try because she was with us. Best morning of two weeks in Japan.

She remembered our dietary stuff without being asked twice and rerouted the whole tasting around it. You can’t fake this level of care.

The tea ceremony made me cry a little, honestly. Ayaka explains just enough and then lets the room be quiet.
